Sentence structure

Building sentences whose parts fit together: a clear subject and verb, parallel elements, and no clause left hanging. Length is fine; confusion is not.

Keep it parallel

Elements joined by et, by ou or in a list take the same form: all nouns, all infinitives or all clauses. Write analyser les données, rédiger le rapport et présenter les résultats, not analyser les données, la rédaction du rapport et présenter.

A participle or a gerund at the head of a sentence must share the main clause’s subject. En examinant le dossier, des erreurs ont été relevées says that the errors examined the file.

Negation, questions and word order

In writing, a negation has both its parts: ne… pas, ne… jamais, ne… que. With personne or rien as the subject, keep ne: Personne n’a répondu.

An indirect question keeps statement word order: Je me demande quand la décision sera prise, not quand sera-t-elle prise.
